Yakishime Vase with granite inclusions and white slip.

Yakishime Vase

with handcrafted formal presentation wooden box

This thrown wood fired vase form was placed directly in the firebox of the second chamber of the noborigama, and picked up a lot of fly ash as the flame passed over it out of the first chamber exit flues.  Once side-stoking began on chamber two, wood was carefully thrown directly onto the pot, and this piece eventually was embedded in about 1 1/2 feet of burning wood coals.  The heavy iron bearing clay has granite chunks from a local Milford, NH quarry that provide both visual and tactile texture, and the subtle band of white slip on the shoulder adds textural contrast and visual accent.  #4002
